Take “This” with “That”!

Statins, Birth Control, and Antibiotics

It’s no secret that at Innovative Health Partners, our preference is to naturally prevent health care issues. When imbalance does come to your body, our top choice is to first support you with things that will bring you back into balance, like adjustments, herbs, and nutrition. Although this is our preference, we are not black and white on this topic…we understand that sometimes medicine can be helpful or necessary!

Although you may deem a certain medicine necessary, most drugs can have negative impact elsewhere in your body, in essence, causing further imbalance at times. Here are a few widely used medications whose side effects can be minimized by adding in these simple supplement supports!

STATINS (Cholesterol reducing medication):

While statins work to stop the production of cholesterol in the liver, they also negatively affect the production of CoQ10. CoQ10 plays a vital role in the production of energy in every cell in your body. When statin medication causes lower levels, muscle weakness and cramps occur more often. CoQ10 is also a powerful antioxidant and has been studied for its anti-aging properties.  A common natural remedy for lowering cholesterol is Red Yeast Rice extract, which also shows to lower healthy CoQ10 levels. Sooo…take CoQ10 with Statin drugs or RYR extract! There are two forms of CoQ10 available – ubiquinol and ubiquinone. We find either form helpful and recommend around 200mg a day.

BIRTH CONTROL

urlHere at IHP, we doctors work daily with patients to bring normal hormone balance to women’s bodies. Unfortunately, the birth control pill, which is widely used in our society, negatively impacts a naturally balanced hormone system. We understand that many people choose the benefits of contraception and accept the risk of affecting their hormones. Here are two easy things you can add to your regimen to prevent secondary affects from your pill:

Birth control pills use up a lot of B vitamins to be processed. Adding a good B complex will prevent nutrient depletion.

If it is an estrogen based pill, add DIM (Diindolymethane). DIM helps your body process the extra estrogen. Female related cancers often point the finger at excess estrogens in the body. We think it makes a lot of sense to support this! We recommend about 300mg a day.

Sooo…take a B vitamin and DIM with birth control.

ANTIBIOTICS

You have over 100 trillion bacteria in your gut. You need them! They help you digest your food, support your immune system, and make nutrients and even neurotransmitters. When you take an antibiotic, they are not discriminatory to what they kill. So while the bugs in your sinuses may be disappearing, so are the good ones in your gut. Eek! We recommend taking at least a moderate dose probiotic (20 billion CFU or more) while on an antibiotic and for a couple weeks after. Take the probiotic at a different time of the day than your antibiotic. Better yet, next time you are sick, try high dosing with echinacea which can be clinically as effective as an antibiotic without compromising your gut health! Sooo…take a probiotic with antibiotics.
