Sinus infections and congestion! Eek!

If you’ve ever been a victim of sinusitis, you know that it’s no fun. One minute you can’t breathe. The next minute, your nose has become an uncontrollable faucet of mucus. Oh, and your head feels like 50 pounds of pressure is attacking both sides while that deep dull headache just won’t leave your forehead.  Well, about 40 million Americans suffer from sinusitis, which is inflammation of the nasal sinus cavities, commonly known as a sinus infection. When suffering from chronic sinusitis, it can seriously affect the quality of your life.

Sinusitis can be a seasonal visitor, or for some it can be a chronic, or long term, issue. To better familiarize yourself with sinusitis, these are the symptoms that may present:

  • Runny nose
  • Nasal congestion
  • Thick, possibly colored nasal drainage
  • Headache
  • Frontal (forehead congestion)
  • Post-nasal drip
  • Fatigue
  • Tooth pain
  • Fever

As many of you may know, sinus infections are commonly treated with antibiotics. While this may cover up your symptoms, recent studies are suggesting that this is not the proper form of treatment. Why? antibiotics have been created for bacterial infections. These studies are showing that up to 96% of chronic sinus infections are caused by an immune reaction to fungi….not bacteria! I know, right? Also, certain white blood cells (supporting our immune system) then react negatively to the fungus, causing an inflammatory reaction. Therefore, it is suggested that antibiotics actually have no affect on sinus infections since they treat bacteria, which is not usually the cause of chronic sinusitis.

The population who is going to be more prone to sinusitis will be those who suffer from allergies (food, environmental and seasonal), asthma, and those with a weak immune system. This is because the immune system is already reacting, therefore, it also reacts with the fungal overgrowth, causing symptoms of sinusitis.

So, let’s create happy sinuses. We need to create an environment that makes it difficult for fungus to thrive!

  • Avoid eating processed sugars and grains. Fungus feeds on sugar, causing the fungus to then multiply.
  • Stay away from dairy products. Dairy promotes mucus production.
